London draws people from all over the world. Some come on business, some come to study, to work or on holiday. London is naturally a very English city and it is very cosmopolitan, containing goods, food and entertainment, as well as people, from many countries of the world

London stands on the river Thames. Crossing the river by the Tower Bridge you can see the Tower of London. It is one of the oldest buildings of the city. Many centuries ago it was a fortress, a royal palace and then a prison. Now it is a museum of arms.

The Tower of London

The Tower of London is one of the most interesting historic sights of London. The Tower was founded during the Norman Conquest of England sometimes at the end of 1066. It has 20 towers and the most important of all is the White Tower, which was built by William the Conqueror.

On the bank of the Thames, not far from the Tower of London, you can see Westminster Palace, or the Houses of Parliament. It is the seat of the British government and it is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. In one of its towers there is famous Big Ben, the largest clock of England. It strikes every quarter of an hour.

Westminster Palace

Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official London residence. Tourists always go to see the ceremony of changing the Guard there .

The British Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world with the richest collections. It exhibits man works from all over the world from prehistoric period to modern times. The most famous exhibits of the British Museum are the Parthenon Sculptures, the Rosetta Stone, the mummies of Ancient Egypt. The entry to the museum is free but for several special exhibitions you need tickets.

The British Museum

The London Eye is the major feature of London’s skyline. It consists of thirty-two capsules each holding up twenty-five people. For breathtaking experience and unforgettable view of more than fifty London’s famous landmarks you have just to climb aboard and take a thirty minute ‘excursion’.

The London Eye

The present St. Paul's Cathedral, which was built between 1675 and 1710, is the fourth cathedral to occupy the site, which was sacred even before Christianity arrived. The cathedral's immediate predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Trafalgar Square, the largest square in London, is often considered the heart of the city. Ever since the Middle Ages, this area has been a central meeting place. In the middle of the square stands a tall column honoring admiral Nelson.

Trafalgar Square

Big Ben is one of London's best-known landmarks, and looks most spectacular at night when the clock faces are illuminated. The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock-tower itself, but to the thirteen ton bell hung within. The bell was named after the first commissioner of works, Sir Benjamin Hall. The tower is not open to the general public, but those with a "special interest" may arrange a visit to the top of the Clock Tower
